He lay still, eyes closed in slumber
As if all was right in his world
But
I knew the terrible truth
That my friend would soon be gone
Because whatever
it is that makes us
Individuals, whether it be our soul or
some unknown quantity
as yet undiscovered
was slipping away from him with
each laboured breath.
"Please
don't leave me now,
I'm afraid to die alone," he whispered in his sleep
And
so through the long hours of day into night
I sat and prayed for my friend so
pale and weak
I was startled when he called my name so loud and clear
No weakness
could I hear
"It's alright now," he said
"An Angel has come
for me.
She's taking me home with her"
I felt my heart breaking in two
As
my tears fell on to the lifeless body lying there
And then suddenly as if night
had turned to day
The room glowed in a heavenly white light
I ran to the window
and looked into the sky
And saw a newborn star shining there.
Knowing that
his journey was complete,
I said a final goodbye to a friend no longer here
